There is more than meets the eye as far as the Blackhawk Level 3 Serpa Duty Holster is concerned.
For it be certified a "Level 3" Holster, there have to be three different and independent retention devices built into it. In this case the three retention devices are:
- Tension. Adjust it with any Philips head screwdriver.
- The SERPA lock, which secures the trigger guard of the weapon until activated/released by the shooter during the draw stroke.
- What BlackHawk calls a "Pivot Guard," which is a spring-loaded chunk of polymer which pivots up and over the back of the weapon slide and, again, is released/activated during the natural draw stroke.
Now for the smooth draw.The natural draw stroke, as it happens, supports the smooth unlocking of the holster and drawing of the weapon:
- You secure a normal grip on your weapon and in the process sweep your thumb across the Pivot Guard release.
- The Pivot Guard is open and you complete your motion of gripping the weapon.
- Your trigger finger activates the SERPA Lock release just prior to you beginning your draw.
These motions can be performed almost simultaneously, providing for a fast natural draw from the security of a Level III Duty Holster.
